Rijeka’s planetarium. Waterproofing and humidity barrier solution, HYPERDESMO®-PB-2K

Project Description   

One of the best attractions in Rijeka city is the Rijeka astronomy center which it has opened in 2001. The center is repurposed second World War military fortress and represents the biggest ever investment in Croatia’s technological culture. The architectural design of the center based on a minimalistic exposed concrete structure. The astronomy center includes an observatory and a planetarium which is the only digital planetarium in Croatia. Inside the planetarium the main hall offers 50 seats where the guests can enjoy projections (live presentations) of the skyline and celestial objects or watch films on astrology and underwater world, which are displayed on an 8m diameter dome above their heads.  

Project Requirements  

With the building being finished entirely by concrete the construction plan included the insulation of the concrete roof and walls with insulation foam boards for achieving the best energy efficiency of the building and protect it from weathering. In that case, the project itself required an absolute waterproofing of the concrete substrate throughout the whole structure. While the sensitive electronics equipment of the astronomy center required vapor barrier protection in order to ensure its safe operation.

Qatar – Exposed Metal roof waterproofing and protection system in the international media communication network.

Project Description

This complex application installed in the 3.200 m2 roof of one of the most famous international media communication network in Doha. In an area that extreme climatic conditions occur such as high temperatures, high moisture and humidity levels, especially in the autumn period, and sandstorms which constantly push the construction materials to their operating limits especially on roofs. In addition, during heavy rains there is always the risk of unwanted water infiltration and humidity to cause considerable damage and corrosion to the metal roofs.

Project Requirements

As water and sunlight resistance are detrimental to the durability of coatings used on metal roofs, it is paramount for such project to fulfill high demands by close monitoring for highly detailed development and completion.

For the waterproofing of the metal roofs in this project, ALCHIMICA’s exposed metal roof system based on the HYPERDESMO® System was used. In this project, weathering steadily had damaged the large units of the metal roof parts and especially the cut edges causing the removal of the protective coatings and revealing the bare metal core to further corrosion. The project itself required specific requirements due to the complexities on the exposed metal roof and the corrosion problems that have been caused to the gutters and details.

ALCHIMICA SOLUTIONS

For this system, MICROSEALER-50, the low viscosity polyurethane-based primer, was used for the priming of the substrate and for the protection of the metallic roof joints and cut edges. HYPERSEAL®-EXPERT-150 was used for sealing the inner angles and gutters while reinforcement with GEOTEXTILE-50 was undertaken where needed for better future cracks protection. The HYPERDESMO®-CLASSIC was used as the main waterproofing membrane of the system and finally HYPERDESMO®-ADY-E finished the build-up system for color stability and UV protection.

The subject reference project took place in the production and logistics plant of Sunlight batteries. With almost 30 years of experience in the market, Sunlight Group is a world-leading provider of industrial and advanced energy storage solutions. It has one of the most modern industrial units in Europe, in accordance with the strictest international standards which covers a total area of 200.000m², with indoors areas of more than 60.000m².  

The manufacturing plant and logistics centre are located in Xanthi, northern Greece, where the company distributes its products to serve the group’s exports worldwide.   

The latest expansion of their facilities, required the installation of a new flooring system that could withstand high traffic, offer high chemical resistance while maintaining a wide operating temperature window and maintaining non-slip properties.

In this case, our innovative non-toxic high wear and chemical resistance HYGROSMART®-PU-CEMENT-3K was used to offer the greatest resistance to any impact in the floor, handle the movement of large equipment, abrasion and aggressive chemicals.    

The self-levelling HYGROSMART®-PU-CEMENT-3K with its self-levelling properties, offered ease of application along with high workability, while reducing in this way the non-operating time of the facility. In addition, with its ability to fill gaps and cavities during the application it provided an impenetrable surface, protecting from possible leaks.

Qatar – Exposed concrete roof waterproofing and protection system in the international media communication network.

Fitness Flooring Solution in Panhellinios weightlifting hall.

Panhellinios Gymnastics Club which can be translated as ‘’Pan- Hellenic gymnastics Club’’ is a Greek multi-sport club that is located in Athens and was founded in 1891. It is one of the oldest and most successful multi-sports clubs in Greece and considered one of the oldest sports clubs in Europe.   

One of the most significant sports departments of Panhellinios Club, is its weightlifting sports division which has created many great Olympic athletes. Everyday a lot of young athletes are training intensely to achieve great performances. In ancient Greece, weightlifting symbolized the strength and physical beauty and it still is a very popular sport in Greece keeping on this rich tradition.

Project Requirements  

The sports hall needed renovation in its training floor but also to expand the floor in unexploited areas of the building. In weightlifting training, the floors are used quite intensively, weight bars are used and placed in the floor constantly, thus creating a high mechanical pressure along with the hard traffic that the surface is exposed to. The club wanted to provide an ideal training environment with a strong, safe and comfortable floor for daily demanding usage along with a proper decor and inspiring colors.

Roof waterproofing in Park View Erbil in IRAQ

Park View is one of the most prestigious projects in Arbil that is located on the airport road in front of Dream city and close to Erbil International airport. The project consists of 12 buildings which have been constructed in a circular form except from the ”Dream” building that it is placed in a rectangular way. Each building has 18 floors and offers spectacular view.

Upon curing it produces a high performance waterproofing pourable sealant that remains elastic even below -40 °C with excellent chemical and mechanical resistance.
